A Better City Praises Next Generation Climate Bill as Bipartisan Model

This afternoon, Governor Baker signed Senate Bill 9, An Act Creating a Next Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy, into law. Rick Dimino, President & CEO of A Better City, released the following statement:

“Our leaders have risen to the occasion to deliver the smart, workable, and equitable climate solutions needed for the Commonwealth to recover, grow, and thrive. Through good-faith collaboration between the Governor, Legislature, and business community, this landmark climate bill serves as a national model for bipartisan creativity, collaboration, and compromise.

The final statutory language includes many of A Better City’s recommendations to strengthen and clarify the stretch energy building code, which will include—but importantly, not be limited to—a net-zero compliance pathway. In alignment with A Better City’s feedback, the new law also ensures that the updated stretch energy code is structured in a phased manner to account for technical constraints and extends the stretch code development timeline to roughly 18 months, providing stakeholders with more opportunity for critical input.

A Better City is grateful for the vision and partnership of the Baker Administration, Legislature, and our solution-oriented member companies and institutions. We are eager to help the Administration develop a strategic and practical approach to implementing this legislation that will uplift our communities and businesses alike.”
