Creating a sustainable work site takes more than providing little blue bins and turning off the lights at the end of the day. Employees and tenants are beginning to expect the businesses they work for and buildings they work in to do their part in addressing the ever increasing issues of climate change and sustainability.

You are invited to join A Better City for an intensive half-day of presentations and discussions that will lead you through the process of creating a sustainable work site for today and tomorrow.

9:00 - 10:30am: Creating a Green Work Environment: From Planning to Operations

Speakers will cover best practices for reducing your corporate environmental footprint through the design, construction, and operations of your facility.  Topics covered will include:

  • creating a useful metric for analyzing and developing strategies to optimize green initiatives and return on investment. 
  • reducing paper consumption and enhancing existing recycling programs,
  • handling electronic waste, and other topics.worksheets will be provided to guide your efforts when you return to the office.

 

10:30 - 10:45am: Break

10:45 - 12:00pm: Energy Efficiency and Management at the Worksite

Speakers will present innovative strategies and programs to promote clean and efficient energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from your worksite or building. Topics covered will include:

  • using EPA tools and resources, including ENERGY STAR
  • local and federal funding opportunities
  • policy guidance and technical assistance

Speaker Bios

Peter Barsamian is the Director of Energy Services at NSTAR.  He is responsible for the delivery of all of NSTAR’s Commercial and Industrial customer services, including: Energy Efficiency Programs, New Customer Connections, Reliability and Billing.  He has been with NSTAR since 1990 and started in the Energy Efficiency Department as a Project Engineer.  Prior to joining NSTAR he worked in the commercial construction industry as a Project Engineer.  Pete holds an MBA in Finance from Bentley Graduate School and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from UMass, Amherst.   


Fran Boucher, is currently a Program Manager for National Grid's Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency Group focusing on new sustainable design for new construction/ major renovation projects. He is a Certified Energy Manager and a LEED Accredited Professional He has over 25 years experience in Energy Efficiency, Facility Management and Commercial Construction including notable firms, such as National Grid, Beacon Properties, State Street Bank and Tufts University.

Currently is primary assignment is National Grid's project team liaison for sustainable features on the design of National Grids new LEED Gold targeted Corporate Offices in Waltham. He is alos the Program manager of their Advanced Buildings program and other sustainable integrated design efforts serving the companies large commercial and industrial customers. He is the recipient of the 2007 Association of Energy Engineer's Region One Energy Professional Development Award. He has been a primary contributor on the voluntary team that created and maintains the New Building Institutes Advanced Building Program for the design of High Performance Buildings.  Projects under his direction have recently won a National Grid Chairman’s award plus awards from the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership.  He is a frequent speaker and professional trainer for programs at; the Boston Chapters of both ASHRAE and the Association of Energy Engineers, as well as the Boston Society of Architects.  

Jeff Cantin is a Vice President at ERG, a national environmental consulting firm based in Lexington, Massachusetts. Mr. Cantin is a national expert in corporate environmental management systems, including greening offices and operations. Over the past 18 years, he has assisted large corporations, such as Lucent Technologies and Sanyo North America, and government agencies, such as the US EPA, reduce their environmental footprint. He has trained hundreds of business executives, managers, and other staff in establishing baseline measurements for building and corporate-wide environmental performance and in institutionalizing processes to help companies save money and reduce their environmental impacts.

Mr. Cantin is certified as a lead auditor for environmental management systems and has completed the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership’s Building Operator Certification course, which covers the energy aspects of building construction and building systems operation.

Kenneth Fisher's twenty years of experience include the design, coordination and execution of a variety of project types including commercial architecture and corporate campus planning; academic and institutional facilities; single and multi-family housing; corporate interiors; and retail.  Since joining Gensler in 1996, Mr. Fisher has served as the senior project architect and project manager on a variety of project types.  In addition to his project involvement, Mr. Fisher serves as the Architecture Studio Leader in the Boston office. He is a member on the Firmwide Technical Steering Committee, Building Design Consultation Task Force, and Sustainable Design Task Force.  Mr. Fisher is a member of The Boston Society of Architects and serves as the Co-Chairperson for the Committee on the Environment (COTE). In the past, Mr. Fisher has served as the northeast representative for the AIA COTE Regional Team and as a member of the steering committee for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Roundtable on Sustainable Design.  Mr. Fisher currently serves on the Town of Marblehead Conservation Commission.

Mr. Fisher received his Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon. He holds a Master of Science from the University of California in Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California in Berkeley, both with concentrations in Physics.

Robert Guillemin works in EPA New England’s Office of Assistance and Pollution Prevention where he promotes emerging environmental technologies and supports pollution prevention initiatives that include environmentally preferable purchasing programs.  Previously, he was the Environmental Purchasing Coordinator for the state of Connecticut where he initiated the state's Green Purchasing Program and worked with state agencies and vendors to purchase green products and services.

Eugene M. Lisa is recognized as one of the premier speakers and educators on “green” products and materials for commercial furnishings in North America.

Drawing on  30  years  of experience with commercial furnishings as a dealer sales representative and then as a  manufacturers’ representative , he understands how to  work with architects, interior designers and end users.  His “green” journey began in 1992 , initially  representing some specialty furniture and then expanding to incorporate flooring products and  raw materials made from recycled content.

Today a primary focus is  providing educational forums to the A&D Community on sustainable issues  and teaching sales professionals how to understand and market “green” to both the commercial and government sectors. Gene consults with a variety of manufacturers, dealers and design firms and can provide a varied menu of services.

Gene’s  early exposure to this still  emerging market  has led to attendance at numerous national and international trade shows, conferences and exhibitions where we he has been an exhibitor, speaker and participant in lectures and panel discussions.

He has lectured extensively  throughout North America and Europe on  environmental materials, products and sustainable design , He has addressed numerous local chapters of IIDA,  IFMA, USGBC, ASID regional conventions, and various NeoCon venues.

His extensive experience in the industry, and longevity in the area of environmental products, brings a unique contribution to the professional designer, and facilities planner.

John Moskal has spent over 20 years in the private and public sectors in the energy and environmental fields.  He currently works at the New England regional office of the EPA where he specializes in analyzing environmental impacts associated with restructured energy markets, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.  He is a frequent speaker at professional forums on these topics as well as guest lecturer at several New England Universities.  He is an engineer by training.
