South Boston Gateways

Richard A. Dimino

The South Boston Gateways Study, (23.5 MB PDF) completed in October 2005, supports one of A Better City’s key objectives: to help enrich Boston’s public realm in order to improve our quality of life and enhance the competitive position of Boston.  This study was conducted by ABC’s South Boston Waterfront Abutters Group, co-chaired by Michael E. Mooney of Nutter McClennen &; Fish and David Holloway of Seaport Asset Management, in collaboration with the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Authority’s Crossroads Initiative.

Study Description

The consensus-based study focused on streetscape enhancements for four key streets connecting the emerging South Boston Waterfront with historic Downtown Boston (Old Northern Avenue, Seaport Boulevard, Congress Street and Summer Street). Anticipating the sequence and scale of future development along the streets’ edges, the study outlines recommendations and strategies to enable a clearer identity for the individual streets as well as create a distinct sense of place for the district as a whole.

With the study completed, the South Boston Waterfront Gateways Committee is now focused on identifying next steps for the implementation of concepts presented in the report.
